The Bhutan Football Federation signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Royal Netherlands Football Association on 11th April, 2023 at Hotel Druk where the Press Conference of the World Coaches Course was held. The press conference was attended by the Hon. Consulate for The Netherlands to Bhutan, Mrs. Phuntshok Choden, the founder of WorldCoaches, Mr. Johan van Geijn, the CEO of Acosa Sports India, Mr. Deepak, and the General Secretary of BFF, Mr. Ugyen Wangchhuk. Some of the extremities in the MoU are: Technical Cooperation and Projects, which include the bilateral cooperation of the KNVB with the BFF on creating projects for coach education, skill upgradation programs for coaches in Bhutan, focusing on women’s football development, youth team development, referee education, and infrastructure guidelines and planning From the press conference: Phuntshok Choden, “I think the Bhutan Football Federation and its members have come a long way, and BFF is still thriving to do more and this course at this time, to have football stars like Johanese and Bera in the country, to really inspire, to really give your best, will just inspire our youngsters and the coaches in the country and I would like to thank the world coaches course for bringing the course in the country of happiness. Itโ€™s really well timed because the football community in the country is growing and it’s a source of pride for all Bhutanese to have you here.” Johannes Antonius, “It’s a great privilege to be back in Bhutan, I was here in Bhutan in 2002 and 2003 with the Bhutan Olympics. To talk about the course, in 2008, the football association in my country decided that social responsibility is a part of football and should be written down in the papers for the development of football, and so that will allow the program to become a real target and policy within the football association to help other countries develop their football, not just for football but for social development, and the world coaches course has manifested in many aspects of social development related to health issues, gender equality, social cohesion of countries where they have to deal with refugees, migrantsโ€ฆ thatโ€™s where football can really help.” Johannes Jacobus Neeskens, “Itโ€™s a pleasure to be here. I am happy to have a fantastic group of participants in the course, and most importantly, to see 6 women participating in the course because, in our course, it’s very important to include women and I think we should also empower the women to beat their male counterparts and reach the same level. We are very enthusiastic. The participants are very enthusiastic too and very eager to learn a lot, and of course we will impart as much information as we can so that they can improve as coaches, and I am sure they will be able to learn more and know how to work with different age groups and life skills, which is very important in our program, so that they can integrate life skills with football and hopefully the continuation of learning in their lives.” Press Conference Ugyen Wangchhuk, “When I heard about the course from Mr.Deepak, who has been closely working with the Bhutan Football Federation in terms of the development of the infrastructure in the country with regard to football, I came up with the feeling that the world coaches program is glad to be taken by the Bhutan Football Federation and on whether the federation would be interested or not, my first reaction to that was can we also be involved in it. And the first thought that came to my mind was about the match held at Changlimithang when the Bhutan national team got support from the Netherlands coach in the year 2002. His experiences in football will help our federation develop. I thought maybe this would also help our federation grow because, for now, we focus on grassroots football too. So therefore, I thought maybe this would be a different angle of approach to our coaches, and therefore, my first reaction when Deepak told me that he wants to bring the World Coaches Course to Bhutan, I said yes, and I was overjoyed to hear that they would like to help us.”

Already in 2002 and 2003 Bhutan was able to benefit from Dutch Coaching in the days of Mr. Arie Schans and his colleagues who came for football courses in 2003. In the 20 years in between Football has grown in Bhutan and KNVB is excited to return to Bhutan to work again with local coaches, both men and women. With thanks to Bhutan Football Federation and Acosa Sports India to make this possible. The 5-day course starts on 10 April at RTC College where Dutch All-time World Cup Hero Johan Neeskens will join his colleague Bert Zuurman for an intense 5 days of football coaching and Life Skills. On April 11th the Press has a chance to meet with Johan Neeskens, who has been connected since 2012 to WorldCoaches. He featured in 2 consecutive WorldCup finals (1974 and 1978) and he was the first Dutch player ever to score in a WorldCup Final. The former Player of Ajax Amsterdam and FC Barcelona brings an experienced colleague to Bhutan, as Bert Zuurman worked for almost 5 years in India as coach and education Director at the Ozone Academy in Bangalore. KNVB is a well-known and respected partner of Asian Football, having several cooperation Agreements with Football Associations on various aspects of development of Football. Football Education Support to AFC goes back to 1996. Officials of KNVB will hold talks with Bhutan Football Federation and the Bhutan authorities on a possible Memorandum of Understanding. The Ambassador for the Netherlands to Bhutan, Mr. Marten van den Berg, will possibly join the Course for a few days as well on an official visit. In case he canโ€™t make it, he will be represented by the Hon. Consul for The Netherlands to Bhutan, Mrs. Phuntshok Choden. Acosa Sports India is a partner of KNVB to promote WorldCoaches in the region. [Quote Johan Neeskens]: โ€˜We are extremely happy to come to Bhutan, for me a first chance to experience the country of Happiness. Iโ€™m living in Switzerland where we have mountains, but not compared to Bhutan. For Coach Education, we see no Mountain High enough. Anyone passionate about guiding children in a positive way to help them grow in life should get the chance to join our courses. Iโ€™m happy to come to work with the local Coaches. After the pandemic itโ€™s time that the youth all over the world, boys and girls, are back on the field and that they are trained by well-educated coaches, who do not only look at performance on the field, but also look at well-being and of children and guidance off the fieldโ€™. Football should always make you happy! Being back in Bhutan after 20 years is thrilling. In those days we came to discuss Sports Policy for the Country and see what Bhutan has achieved in these years! Football is all about collaboration and communication, about fair play, respect for diversity and dealing with frustrations. We can inform children on Healthy Lifestyle and teach social skills to our children in a fun way through football, which will benefit them in all aspects of their life.โ€ Says Johan van Geijn of KNVB, founder of WorldCoaches, working at KNVB since 1998 on International Coaching Programs. โ€œA Cooperation with Bhutan fits perfectly in our International Strategy, where we want to be seen as an Innovative Association, looking for impact and working for the Future of Football. We need good partnerships to be able to fulfill the need for good and social coaches so they can coach the children and youth of Bhutan. โ€œAs coaches, it plays a vital role in nurturing the talents of young athletes and guiding them towards their goals. Such support to develop the coaches in Bhutan inspires us all to take football further up in the wholesome development.โ€- Ugyen Wangchhuk, General Secretary of Bhutan Football Federation โ€œThe World Coaches program will support coaches to improve their skills and knowledge, and to help them develop athletes to their full potential. The coaches play a very vital role in the development of sports programs; thus, this program will provide them with education, training, and support to help them succeed. Additionally, the program will emphasize the importance of sports as a powerful tool for promoting social development, and coaches play a key role in this process.โ€- Yeshey Dorji, Officiating Technical Director of Bhutan Football Federation. The WorldCoaches Program has been active around the world since 2010. Since then more than 16,000 coaches have joined Worldwide from more than 65 countries, with almost 30% of them being female coaches. A percentage that should grow for equal opportunities.

The U-12 and U-10 categories kicked off from today however, the U-8 boys and U-12 girls are going to be kicked off from 28th December, 2022 Under 12 Boys and Under 10 Category Brotherhood FA CG7 Academy Takin FA Friends United FA Junior FA Paro FA(Team Paro) Paro FA(Team Thimphu) Tensung FA Thimphu City FA Young Dragon FA Druk Lhayul FA Transport United FA Young Dragons Warriors Under 8 Boys Category Brotherhood FA CG7 Academy Takin FA Friends United FA Junior FA Paro FA(Team Paro) Paro FA(Team Thimphu) Tensung FA Thimphu City FA Young Dragon FA Young Dragons Warriors Under 12 Girls Category Brotherhood FA Friends United FA Junior FA Tensung FA As per the head of Grassroots Football Division, Yeshey Dorji he stated that the main objective for conducting such events is to encourage mass participation of children, keeping them engaged in football during the winter breaks and giving everyone a chance to enjoy the beautiful game of football. He also stated that this year’s league is more of a festival for the kids as well as the parents so that everyone can come together and enjoy. Moreover, the league will give an opportunity to the kids to gain some match experiences, make friends, learn the know-how about the real game plan which they have been learning and training at the clubs and academies. ย  From this league, the grassroots Football Division aims to select potential kids and enroll them in the BFF Grassroots Elite Football Program and even enroll them in the BFF Academy like last year . The league also aims to inculcate some moral values, promote fair play, making them understand and respect the laws and spirit of the game. The father of Kinrig Norten who plays for CG7 Academy under 10 category Mr. Kinzang Tshering stated that starting the mini dragons league has lots of benefits for the kids as well as for parents like them because we can see the skills and composure that my kid have learned during the training at the academy and it’s a platform for the kids to show their skills and talents in front of others. As parents we also get excited just to see our child play. In my opinion if this league happens every year, it will be the beginning for the kids to learn and play better in future whether it is in clubs or in the national squad. Not only that, this league will also serve as a new beginning for the future of footballing in the country. On the other hand, the head coach of Transport United Football Association Mr. Tshering Dendup stated that the league is very important for the clubs as they are trained in the club for a year and it is also a platform to show their parents and friends. And as a coach we will know their mentality and potentials during real games. The Mini Dragons League aims to set out the rights and responsibilities of the BFF and the participating teams taking part in the competition. It will also assist clubs, academies, schools, non-government organizations, parents, coaches, and football lovers to organize the Mini Dragons League anywhere in the country. We believe that children learn a lot more by playing games than by training. However, healthy competition is important for the development of these young players in football. We must let the players play for fun and enjoy the game without thinking about the results. The league aims to give opportunities to all the children in the country irrespective of their age, ability, gender, religion, social background, or origin. And henceforth, the Mini Dragon League will happen every year.
