Karma

On behalf of the Bhutan Football Federation and the entire football community, we would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Coach Karma Dema. This groundbreaking achievement is not just a personal triumph, but a defining moment that will inspire generations of young girls and aspiring female leaders across the nation.

From Mongar to the Capital

Hailing from the scenic district of Mongar, where she grew up alongside her two sisters, Karma’s relationship with football began in primary school. What started as simple, joyful matches with friends quickly evolved into a lifelong calling. “Through football, I learned teamwork, discipline, and hard work,” Coach Karma recalls, reflecting on her early years. “It helped me grow both as a player and as a person.”

As her playing days shaped her character, her perspective began to shift toward management. Driven by a deep desire to give back to the sport that defined her childhood, she transitioned into coaching. For her, the role was never just about tactics on a clipboard; it was about molding futures.

“To be a coach makes me proud and motivated to guide young players, share my experience, and help them improve both on and off the field,” she shares.

Overcoming the Odds

The path to the Pro License, the highest professional certification available in football coaching, is notoriously grueling, and Karma’s journey was fraught with obstacles. In a landscape where women in sports leadership still face steep uphill battles, she had to contend with a lack of facilities, sparse equipment, and limited opportunities.

Beyond the systemic challenges lay the emotional and physical toll of competitive football. Karma opens up about the moments that truly tested her resolve:

“There were many difficult moments that tested my patience, hard work, and passion. There were moments of disappointment after losing matches, facing criticism, injuries, and pressure during competitions. As a coach, I faced challenges in managing players, building team spirit, and improving performance. But I never gave up on my dream.”

Through every setback, Karma notes that football made her mentally and physically stronger. Crucially, she was never entirely alone in her battles. Her family provided a steady foundation of support from the moment she first kicked a ball as a child.

“Their motivation, care, and belief in me gave me the strength to continue my football journey and work hard to achieve my dreams,” she says.

A Historic Triumph

When asked about the ultimate highlight of her career so far, Coach Karma points directly to a recent, historic milestone: the 2026 SAFF Championship. Leading her team to a historic semifinal finish on the regional stage stands out as an unforgettable summit of her career.

“Reaching the SAFF semifinals in 2026 became one of the most memorable achievements in my football journey,” she says, her pride palpable. “This milestone gave me great happiness, confidence, and motivation. Securing that spot in the semifinals was not only a proud moment for me, but also for my players, staff, family, and everyone who supported us throughout the journey.”

Inspiring the Next Generation

Now holding the elite Pro License, Coach Karma Dema is a blueprint for what is possible in sports leadership. When asked what message she wanted to send to the women watching her rise, her words echoed with empowerment:

“To all female coaches, always believe in yourself and never stop chasing your dreams. The journey in football is not always easy, but your passion, hard work, and dedication will help you grow stronger every day. Keep learning, keep inspiring young players, and continue breaking barriers in football. Your leadership and commitment can create a bright future for the next generation of women in sports. Stay confident, stay positive, and never give up.”
