The Thunderbolts cruise passed Drukpa FC
The latest Thimphu Derby delivered everything football fans hoped for drama, intensity, and a thrilling comeback as Thimphu FC secured a hard-fought victory over Drukpa FC at Changlimithang Stadium in the BoB Bhutan Premier League 2026.
Both teams, the newest additions to the league, entered the derby with plenty to prove. Having previously faced each other during the qualifiers, this encounter carried extra significance as both sides came into the match with new squads, new leadership, and renewed ambitions.

The opening half was filled with energy, competitive battles, and moments of quality from both sides. Despite creating opportunities, neither team was able to find the breakthrough, leaving the supporters eagerly waiting for the opening goal. The deadlock was finally broken after the restart.
Drukpa FC drew first blood through Sangay Rinchen, who scored his first goal of the season. A perfectly timed one-touch pass from Leon Sullivan sliced through the Thimphu FC defence, allowing Sangay to make a well-timed run into the box before calmly placing the ball into the far corner to give Drukpa the lead.

However, the Thunderbolts responded quickly. Chizoba, who scored the decisive goal in their previous match against Tensung FC, once again proved his importance in attack. A well-delivered cross from Chencho Nio from the right flank found Chizoba inside the box, and the forward rose highest to head the ball into the net to restore parity.

The momentum shifted further in Thimphu FC’s favour when they were awarded a penalty after Phuntsho Jigme brought down Chizoba inside the box, leaving the referee with no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
With the responsibility on his shoulders, captain Chencho stepped up and delivered under pressure. The skipper kept his composure and calmly converted the penalty to complete the comeback and put the Thunderbolts ahead.

The match was briefly halted after the goal following an altercation in the stands between supporters of both clubs. During the stoppage, two Thimphu FC bench players were shown red cards.

Despite the late drama and Drukpa FC’s efforts to find an equaliser in the closing stages, the Thunderbolts remained resilient to secure all three points and claim the derby bragging rights.

The victory extends Thimphu FC’s strong run of form, while Drukpa FC will look to regroup after another challenging result. In a match filled with passion, emotion, and intensity, the Thimphu Derby once again showcased the excitement and unpredictability that local rivalries bring to football.
