Dragon Boys Secures First Win Over Bangladesh After Eight Years in a Thrilling Encounter
The much-anticipated second leg of the FIFA International Friendly against Bangladesh kicked off at Changlimithang Stadium, following Bhutan’s narrow defeat in the first leg held on 5th September at the same venue. Both teams made several changes to their starting XI, with Bhutan significantly altering their lineup compared to the first leg. In the pre-match press conference, Bhutan’s head coach, Mr. Nakamura, emphasized that unlike the first leg, the team would focus more on attacking rather than defending.
The first half was intense but ended 0-0, with both teams locked in a stalemate. Bhutan applied continuous pressure, building attacks and pushing forward in search of a goal. Tshiltrim and Yeshi Dorji came close to scoring but were unable to find the back of the net. Despite Bhutan’s attacking efforts, Bangladesh’s defense stood firm, keeping the scoreline untouched. As the second half approached, Bhutan aimed to capitalize on their chances, while Bangladesh looked to counter Bhutan’s attacks with a strong defense and counter-attacks.
In the second half, both teams fought relentlessly for a breakthrough. The match featured end-to-end action, with Bhutan’s forwards creating several opportunities, but Bangladesh’s defense remained solid. Despite numerous chances and close attempts from both sides, the score remained level. However, in stoppage time, Kinga Wangchuk made a decisive play, scoring from close range after a well-timed flick by Pema in the opposition’s box. Bhutan clinched a 1-0 victory, breaking their eight-year win drought against Bangladesh.
In the post-match interview, the goal scorer and man of the match, Kinga Wangchuk, expressed his joy, saying, “It’s a dream come true to score at Changlimithang Stadium, and we are very happy to get the win in front of our supporters.” Head coach Mr. Atsushe Nakamura also shared his satisfaction with the win, noting that while Bhutanese players may lack physicality, teamwork and cooperation will be key to future successes. He added that the team performed better than in the first leg, as the players had adapted to his style of play.
In the end, Bhutan’s 1-0 victory was made possible by the late goal from Kinga Wangchuk. Despite Bangladesh’s defensive resilience and multiple counter-attack attempts, they couldn’t break through Bhutan’s defense to equalize.
It was an unforgettable victory and a proud moment for all Bhutanese.
