The Bhutan National Under-23 Team has been drawn into Group A alongside hosts Jordan, Turkmenistan, and Chinese Taipei for the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers.

The AFC U23 Asian Cup is a biennial international competition organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), featuring men’s under-23 national teams from across Asia. For the upcoming seventh edition, a total of 15 qualification spots are available. Saudi Arabia has already secured its place in the tournament as the host nation. The remaining 15 spots will be contested by 44 teams, divided into 11 groups of four teams each, in the qualifiers. Each group will compete in a single round-robin format at a centralized venue. At the conclusion of the qualifiers, the 11 group winners and the four best second-placed teams will earn their places in the continental tournament set to take place in Saudi Arabia. The AFC U23 Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers are scheduled from September 1 to 11, 2025. The official draw ceremony was held today at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The AFC conducts Club Licensing Audits in Bhutan

Officials from the AFC met with the BFF on February 19, 2025, to discuss the development of club structures in Bhutan. The focus was on key areas such as sporting, personnel and administration, legal, and finance, aligning with the AFC’s club licensing criteria. This visit was part of a two-day onsite audit to evaluate and enhance the club licensing system within the country. During the session, the AFC delegation engaged with BFF representatives to review and clarify the existing club licensing framework implemented by the federation. The discussions centred on ensuring that Bhutanese clubs met the standards outlined in the AFC Club Licensing Regulations, which served as a benchmark for professional club management and operations across Asia. On February 20, the AFC officials conducted an onsite audit of Thimphu City Football Club. Additionally, they held meetings with officials from several other clubs that had adopted the AFC club licensing system, including Transport United FC, Transport United Ladies FC, Ugyen Academy FC, Ugyen Academy Women’s FC, RTC FC, RTC Women’s FC, and Paro FC. These engagements aimed to assess the clubs’ compliance with licensing criteria and provide guidance on areas requiring improvement. By adhering to these standards, clubs enhanced their organizational structures, ensuring sustainable development and improved performance on and off the field. The Bhutan Football Federation introduced club licensing regulations in 2016 to elevate the professionalism of football clubs in Bhutan. This initiative had been pivotal in improving club management and operations, providing a structured pathway for clubs to participate in top-tier competitions. The ongoing collaboration with the AFC underscored the federation’s commitment to aligning Bhutanese football with continental standards, fostering growth and competitiveness within the sport.

First Batch of Class 12 Graduates from the BFF Academy

The Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) celebrates a milestone achievement as the first-ever batch of graduates from the BFF Academy completes their journey. The graduation ceremony, held at the Academy premises in Changjiji, Thimphu, was graced by the esteemed presence of Dasho Ugen Tsechup, President of the Bhutan Football Federation, along with Executive Members, officials from the Federation, and the Academy’s faculty members. The BFF Academy was inaugurated on May 30, 2022, as a Middle Secondary School by His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck and the President of Bhutan Football Federation, Dasho Ugen Tsechup. In just one year, the Academy was upgraded to a Higher Secondary School, marking significant progress in its mission to nurture young talent. Nestled in the serene location of Changjiji, the BFF Academy provides a unique avenue for aspiring young footballers to excel in both sports and academics. Equipped with state-of-the-art boarding facilities, the Academy ensures holistic development and personalized guidance for students, allowing them to pursue their passion for football while staying committed to their education. India U17 Are The Champions of SAFF U17 Championship 2024

The SAFF U17 Championship 2024 concluded at Changlimithang Stadium, Bhutan, with India crowned champions after an impressive 2-0 victory over Bangladesh in the final. The tournament, which began on September 20, featured seven teams split into two groups. Group A consisted of Nepal, Pakistan, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka, while Group B included India, Bangladesh, and Maldives. In the group stage, Nepal and Pakistan advanced from Group A, and India and Bangladesh progressed from Group B. The semifinals saw India overcome Nepal with a commanding 4-2 win, while Bangladesh edged past Pakistan in a penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw in regular time. The final was a display of India’s dominance, securing the championship with two well-taken goals. Bhutan, despite not advancing past the group stage, was honored with the Fair Play Award for their discipline and sportsmanship throughout the tournament, reflecting their positive spirit and commitment to fair play.

Dragon Boys Secures First Win Over Bangladesh After Eight Years in a Thrilling Encounter

The much-anticipated second leg of the FIFA International Friendly against Bangladesh kicked off at Changlimithang Stadium, following Bhutan’s narrow defeat in the first leg held on 5th September at the same venue. Both teams made several changes to their starting XI, with Bhutan significantly altering their lineup compared to the first leg. In the pre-match press conference, Bhutan’s head coach, Mr. Nakamura, emphasized that unlike the first leg, the team would focus more on attacking rather than defending. The first half was intense but ended 0-0, with both teams locked in a stalemate. Bhutan applied continuous pressure, building attacks and pushing forward in search of a goal. Tshiltrim and Yeshi Dorji came close to scoring but were unable to find the back of the net. Despite Bhutan’s attacking efforts, Bangladesh’s defense stood firm, keeping the scoreline untouched. As the second half approached, Bhutan aimed to capitalize on their chances, while Bangladesh looked to counter Bhutan’s attacks with a strong defense and counter-attacks. In the second half, both teams fought relentlessly for a breakthrough. The match featured end-to-end action, with Bhutan’s forwards creating several opportunities, but Bangladesh’s defense remained solid. Despite numerous chances and close attempts from both sides, the score remained level. However, in stoppage time, Kinga Wangchuk made a decisive play, scoring from close range after a well-timed flick by Pema in the opposition’s box. Bhutan clinched a 1-0 victory, breaking their eight-year win drought against Bangladesh. In the post-match interview, the goal scorer and man of the match, Kinga Wangchuk, expressed his joy, saying, “It’s a dream come true to score at Changlimithang Stadium, and we are very happy to get the win in front of our supporters.” Head coach Mr. Atsushe Nakamura also shared his satisfaction with the win, noting that while Bhutanese players may lack physicality, teamwork and cooperation will be key to future successes. He added that the team performed better than in the first leg, as the players had adapted to his style of play. In the end, Bhutan’s 1-0 victory was made possible by the late goal from Kinga Wangchuk. Despite Bangladesh’s defensive resilience and multiple counter-attack attempts, they couldn’t break through Bhutan’s defense to equalize. Bangladesh started strong and took an early lead in the 5th minute through Shekh Morsalin making it 1-0. Bhutan responded with an equaliser by Orgen Wangchuk Tshering, but the goal was disallowed in the 11th minute of the game. Bhutan created a lot of chances but Despite Bhutan’s effort, Bangladesh held their 1-0 advantage at halftime. In the second half, Bhutan started better and had a crucial moment in the 49th minute when Pema Dendup scored the goal. However, the goal was disallowed for being offside. Additionally, during the throw-in, Bishwanath Ghosh from Team Bangladesh received a yellow card for wasting time, intensifying the pressure in the match. In this back-and-forth match of the game Bangladesh however came out strong and won the match In a closely contested match, Bangladesh defeated Bhutan 1-0. Bhutan struggled to make a breakthrough despite being under constant pressure and having a goal disallowed. Bangladesh’s perseverance and defensive stability eventually protected their narrow lead, allowing them to hang on for the victory. The encounter displayed both teams’ tenacity and skill, but Bangladesh’s early goal and tenacious defence sealed the victory in today’s match. A heartbreak for RTC Women FC in AFC Women’s Champions League debut.

In a thrilling encounter at the Changlimithang Stadium on August 28th, over 1,700 spectators witnessed a fiercely contested match between RTC Women FC and Kitchee SC from Hong Kong, China in the AFC Women’s Champions League | Preliminary Stage 2024/25, Group D. Despite a valiant effort, RTC Women FC fell short, losing 1-0. The match started with RTC Women FC dominating the first 40 minutes, showcasing strong midfield control and defensive resilience, holding 70% of the ball possession. However, despite their dominance, RTC struggled to convert their opportunities into goals, with none of their shots finding the target. Kitchee SC, on the other hand, capitalized on a rare opportunity when Fu Chiu Man, wearing jersey number 8, scored with a well-placed header just before halftime. This goal, their first shot on target, shifted the momentum in Kitchee’s favour, putting RTC Women FC on the back foot as they entered the break trailing 1-0. In the second half, RTC Women FC emerged with renewed vigour, continuing to dominate possession and applying relentless pressure on Kitchee’s defensive line. Despite creating numerous chances, they were unable to break through the solid defence of Kitchee SC, who remained resolute under pressure. Several shots narrowly missed the target, while others were expertly saved by Kitchee’s goalkeeper, frustrating RTC’s attempts to equalize. On the other hand, Kitchee SC also got a one-on-one chance in the dying minutes of the second half after a missed pass from the goalkeeper but failed to bury the ball behind the net. The match ended with Kitchee SC securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory, leaving RTC Women FC at the bottom of the points table with zero points from two matches. This defeat has effectively ended RTC’s hopes of advancing to the group stage of the competition. In his post-match comments, RTC Women FC’s head coach, Jigme, expressed pride in his team’s performance, despite the result. “This was our first time playing an international match at the club level and the Changlimithang Stadium. We are proud of the girls’ effort, and despite the outcome, we are taking this experience positively. We would like to thank everyone who made our first international appearance a special one, not just for RTC WFC but for women’s football in Bhutan. RTC WFC Suffers Narrow Defeat in AFC Women’s Champions League Opener

In an exciting encounter at Changlimithang Stadium on August 25, RTC WFC suffered a narrow 1-2 defeat to Bam Khatoon FC of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the opening match of the AFC Women’s Champions League, Preliminary Stage 2024/25 | Group D. The much-anticipated match began with intense energy from both teams as they sought to gain early control. RTC WFC found their breakthrough in the 26th minute when Ritu Porna Chakma capitalized on a well-placed long-range shot, igniting the crowd’s excitement. However, Bam Khatoon FC responded swiftly, equalising just seven minutes later in the 33rd minute. Mona Hamoudi’s perfectly placed volley left the RTC goalkeeper with no chance. The second half saw both teams remain fiercely competitive. The turning point came in the 74th minute when Shahnaz Jafari Zadeh of Bam Khatoon FC delivered a powerful header into the top corner, following a powerful freekick from 45 yards out by Zahra Ghanbari. This goal crushed the hearts of RTC WFC and the home fans at Changlimithang Stadium, bringing the score to 2-1. Despite RTC WFC’s ongoing attempts to level the match, Bam Khatoon FC’s defence held strong. Ultimately, Bam Khatoon FC emerged victorious with two goals to RTC WFC’s one. The fierce rivalry showcased the skill and tenacity of both teams, highlighting the high calibre of play in women’s football. The match was a testament to dynamic play and intense passion, offering a thrilling and unforgettable spectacle for both the players and the devoted supporters at Changlimithang Stadium.
