Already in 2002 and 2003 Bhutan was able to benefit from Dutch Coaching in the days of Mr. Arie Schans and his colleagues who came for football courses in 2003. In the 20 years in between Football has grown in Bhutan and KNVB is excited to return to Bhutan to work again with local coaches, both men and women. With thanks to Bhutan Football Federation and Acosa Sports India to make this possible. The 5-day course starts on 10 April at RTC College where Dutch All-time World Cup Hero Johan Neeskens will join his colleague Bert Zuurman for an intense 5 days of football coaching and Life Skills. [Quote Johan Neeskens]: ‘We are extremely happy to come to Bhutan, for me a first chance to experience the country of Happiness. I’m living in Switzerland where we have mountains, but not compared to Bhutan. For Coach Education, we see no Mountain High enough. Anyone passionate about guiding children in a positive way to help them grow in life should get the chance to join our courses. I’m happy to come to work with the local Coaches. After the pandemic it’s time that the youth all over the world, boys and girls, are back on the field and that they are trained by well-educated coaches, who do not only look at performance on the field, but also look at well-being and of children and guidance off the field’. Football should always make you happy! Being back in Bhutan after 20 years is thrilling. In those days we came to discuss Sports Policy for the Country and see what Bhutan has achieved in these years! Football is all about collaboration and communication, about fair play, respect for diversity and dealing with frustrations. We can inform children on Healthy Lifestyle and teach social skills to our children in a fun way through football, which will benefit them in all aspects of their life.” Says Johan van Geijn of KNVB, founder of WorldCoaches, working at KNVB since 1998 on International Coaching Programs. “A Cooperation with Bhutan fits perfectly in our International Strategy, where we want to be seen as an Innovative Association, looking for impact and working for the Future of Football. We need good partnerships to be able to fulfill the need for good and social coaches so they can coach the children and youth of Bhutan. “As coaches, it plays a vital role in nurturing the talents of young athletes and guiding them towards their goals. Such support to develop the coaches in Bhutan inspires us all to take football further up in the wholesome development.”- Ugyen Wangchhuk, General Secretary of Bhutan Football Federation “The World Coaches program will support coaches to improve their skills and knowledge, and to help them develop athletes to their full potential. The coaches play a very vital role in the development of sports programs; thus, this program will provide them with education, training, and support to help them succeed. Additionally, the program will emphasize the importance of sports as a powerful tool for promoting social development, and coaches play a key role in this process.”- Yeshey Dorji, Officiating Technical Director of Bhutan Football Federation. The WorldCoaches Program has been active around the world since 2010. Since then more than 16,000 coaches have joined Worldwide from more than 65 countries, with almost 30% of them being female coaches. A percentage that should grow for equal opportunities.

Bhutan Women’s National Team Optimistic About AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifiers.

A new journey  for women’s football in the country… The Bhutan Senior Team will travel to Uzbekistan for the sixth edition of the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, the quadrennial international football competition organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to determine which women’s national teams from Asia qualify for the Olympic football tournament 2024 Paris.  This year, Women’s Football in Bhutan has embarked on many preambles in the AFC competitions, notably, the first entrance of Bhutan in the U20 Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers in Jordan. The Dragon Girls displayed positive footballing by registering the first win against the Mongolia Women’s team in their final match of the qualifiers and winning lots of praise for their performance. And now, the senior women’s team is going to participate in the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, an exciting feat for a tiny country comprising just over 7 million people with only a handful of women committed to the field of football mainly due to cultural and traditional drawbacks. However, the football culture in the country is on the rise with lots of improvements in diverse fields and even in women’s football. The Senior Women’s Team of Bhutan’s recent international tournament was the SAFF Women’s Championship held in Nepal last year. Bhutan went on to progress to the knockout stage after their win over Sri Lanka. However, the run was cut short in the semi-finals by Bangladesh with Bhutan conceding 8 goals. The selections of the Senior Women’s National Team started right after the Bhutan Women’s League. A total of 32 players were selected from the clubs of the highest women’s league in the country. The players were shortlisted based on their performance in the league and were put through a lot of physical training and mental preparedness by the officials of the women’s team. After a month of intense training the final 22 players for the national squad were selected by the selection committee. When asked about the selection of the players the head coach of the senior women’s national team, Mrs. Kung Suk Hong stated that the players are from diverse backgrounds, some players work in an institution, some are sports instructors and most of them are students, who played in the national league last season, who are very enthusiastic about football and most of them are young and energetic. Mrs. Kung Suk Hong We selected the players based on the fitness, touches, and the understanding of the game. Most of the players had international experiences and were already playing in the national team however, the selection team selected a few players who didn’t play for the national squad before. Apart from the same names in the squad of previous years four new players joined the squad these year. Ms. Sonam Lhamo the versatile midfielder who begged the most valuable player in last seasons Women’s National League is also selected in this year’s squad. She stated that it’s been a long time since she has played the international matches. She last played in an international match during SAFF U19 against Bangladesh in the year 2021 and she felt privileged once again to represent the nation on a bigger stage. She hopes to showcase her skills and her performance like she did during the league and she promises to give much more than what she has been doing. Sonam Lhamo Tashi Wangmo Karma Yuden Rigzin Wangmo   On the contrary the captain of the Senior women’s team Ms. Pema stated that they are new in the sense that it is their first appearance for the Senior Team for a few but they all grew up at the Academy with some having been in football for some time now so in that sense, they are not really new to the team per se. We played together for years. What differentiates the youth teams from the Senior is the mental strength and the responsibility of the players. These players will need to play for the younger generations. So, my role as the captain is to help strengthen their mentality and understand the responsibility of playing for the Senior team. Ms. Pema Choden Tshering Along with captaining the team, she is also the head of women’s football and putting on the hat of the Women’s Football head, she stated that the competition is a great opportunity for the girls to understand and further motivate themselves in terms of their player development. “We are playing the Champions of Central (Uzbekistan) and West Asia (Jordan), and hence will get a better understanding of their playing style and level. It is different watching their matches on tv or YouTube and playing them. This will be the first time we will be playing teams ranked in the top 100, in fact even in the top 50 (Uzbekistan 49th). It will be a very difficult job and we will have to be mentally strong, a trait we want our players to develop at a very early age.” She also stated that she is excited about playing with a team from West, Central and East Asia. “I have been playing football ever since I can remember but never played against teams from these regions. It has only been with south Asian countries. I am excited to learn, be challenged and take the learnings from this tournament to future games.” The head coach of the Bhutan Senior Women’s National Team Head coach Mrs. Hong also stated that the girls are well prepared for the tournament and the team has worked on position, tactics and defense. She hopes to win at least 2 games and draw one in the tournament. Bhutan Senior Women’s National Team will travel to Uzbekistan on the 24th of March 2023 and play a friendly match with a local club in Uzbekistan before the actual tournament kicks off. Bhutan sits with the likes of Uzbekistan, Jordan and Timor-Leste. Bhutan will face Uzbekistan in the opening match of  Group A on the 5th of April 2023,  followed by Jordan

Paro FC Crowned The BoB Bhutan Premier League Champions

—The Third Title Success In The Last Four Seasons. The dramatic 2-1 win over Thimphu City FC in the final game for both teams sealed the title for Paro FC. The defending champions Paro FC defended their title after crushing title contender Thimphu City FC in a 2–1 victory. At the end of the season we have seen the Champions finish five points ahead of second-place Thimphu City FC at the grueling battle for supremacy. Paro FC has lifted three BoB Bhutan Premier League titles, while the citizens have won the title once in the last four years. Paro FC have once again shown remarkable consistency this term, with the squad being regularly rotated throughout the season and every player contributing significantly to the success. Winning this year’s title marks Puspalal Sharma’s third major trophy after joining the Tigers. He also begged for the President’s Coach of the Year award in this season’s BoB Bhutan Premier League. “It’s definitely a proud moment for us because you know the life of a coach is cyclical. You win the title today, and tomorrow you start working. So now that 2023 has already started, we definitely have to participate in the AFC, which will happen on August 11 as per the calendar. It’s a great feeling, a moment of celebration, and I am already having to think about our participation to better represent our country at a greater level and with a better performance.” Puspalal Sharma. Paro FC had exceptional form this season, continuing a trend seen over the past four campaigns. In the 68 Bhutan Premier League matches the Tigers have played during the last 4 years, they have won 55 matches, taken 187 points (at an average of 2.61 points per game), and scored a remarkable 270 goals (at an average of 3.97 goals per game). The Tigers have also conceded the fewest goals and boasted the best goal difference during that period. He scored 34 goals in his debut season. Paro Women’s FC Are Crowned The Champions

Paro Women’s FC are the champions of the Kelme Women’s National League, 2022 after nailing RTC WFC at Changlimithang Stadium on New Year’s Day. The Tigress took on the newcomer, RTC WFC in their title decider match on a much colder evening at Changlimithang Stadium. It was a must-win match for the tigress to clinch the trophy. RTC WFC, on the other hand, have improved in the second leg of the league, drawing all of their games against big teams and winning from the bottom tables. The champions didn’t take it easy, as they scored an early goal through Tshering Yangden right after 2 minutes of kickoff. Although it was a quiet evening at Changlimithang Stadium, both teams came close a few times. However, the top scorer of the tigress, “Yeshi Bidha” scored in the 20th minute to double the lead, and Karma Wangmo scored in the dying minutes of the first half to go three up at the break. In the opening of the second half, the head coach of RTC WFC brought on a double substitution to create a compact midfield area and a compact defense line. The second half was more of a midfield battle for both teams as they attempted to build the game in that area. However, Sonam Lhamo sealed the game in the 60th minute of the actual game time from close range In the post-match press conference, the head coach of Paro Women’s FC, Ms. Tandin Bidha, stated that the team is overjoyed to be the champions and that they have been waiting for this moment quite so long. She eventually looked forward to this game because RTC WFC are a good team with lots of quality players in their squad, and it was the title decider match for them. When asked about the performance of the team, she stated that the girls were energetic; they gave 100% in the match, and she also did some homework regarding the tactics of the RTC WFC head coach, and it worked well. On the other hand, the head coach of RTC WFC, Mr. Kinley Tobden stated that they made some blunders in the opening minutes that caused them a lot of trouble, giving the opponent confidence and motivation, and after they conceded two to three goals, they lost their composure. He also stated that they had limited time to prepare for the match because they had back-to-back matches. Paro WFC had a bright season with 13 wins and 1 loss from 14 matches, scoring 93 goals along the way and conceding 11 goals with 2 matches to go. The Tigress’ only loss came at Ugyen Academy Ground at the hands of Ugyen Academy WFC on a single goal from Sunita Rai in the 19th minute. However, they are going to face off again in the final match of the Kelme Women’s National League on January 15, 2023, at Woochu Sports Arena.   In the top scoring chart, Tshering Yangden tops the chart with 56 goals in 14 games for Ugyen Academy WFC, followed by Yeshi Bidha of the Paro WFC with 27 goals and Sonam Wangmo of RTC WFC with 22 goals. Paro WFC are crowned the champions of the Kelme Women’s National League, 2022, with two games in hand, while the defending champions Thimphu Women’s FC are behind with 33 points with one game left, followed by Ugyen Academy WFC, BFF Academy Girls, and RTC WFC.
