Bhutan Earns Silver at FIFA Forward Awards 2025 for Infrastructure Excellence

A proud moment for Bhutanese football.  The Bhutan Football Federation has been awarded Silver in the inaugural FIFA Forward Awards for Asian Member Associations for its impactful infrastructure development and the Construction of Four Artificial Pitches across the country. Launched in January 2023, the FIFA Forward Awards aim to celebrate and recognise outstanding football infrastructure projects implemented by Asian Member Associations with the support of the FIFA Forward Programme. Out of 12 strong applications submitted from across the continent, our project stood out for its strategic significance in promoting grassroots and elite football development. The Silver Award puts us alongside some of Asia’s most progressive footballing nations. Only five Member Associations received this honour in the infrastructure category. We shared the Silver tier with the Bahrain Football Association and the Uzbekistan Football Association, while Indonesia, Thailand, and the Kyrgyz Republic took home the Gold. The award was received by the Vice-President of the Bhutan Football Federation, Mr. Pema Dorji and the General Secretary, Mr. Ugyen Wangchhuk, during the FIFA Executive Football Summit 2025 in Miami, USA, today. This award reaffirms our strategic vision and consistent progress toward building a strong football culture from infrastructure to grassroots to international competition.

BoB Bhutan Premier League, 2025

Clash of Momentum and Memories

All eyes will be on Changlimithang Stadium as Thimphu City FC, one of the early title contenders, takes on Samtse FC in a crucial encounter of the 2025 BoB Bhutan Premier League. The Citizens are off to a flying start this season, having won all three of their opening fixtures in perfect fashion. Sitting second on the table with 9 points, they’ve scored six and conceded just once. Either a win or a draw could temporarily take them to the top, overtaking Paro FC. In contrast, Samtse FC find themselves in the middle of the standings with 4 points from a win, a draw, and a loss. While their form has been mixed, they possess firepower and have shown in their last match that they could pose a serious threat to the Citizens. One player who has lit up the league so far is Keuvin Brice, Samtse’s forward and current top scorer with four goals. His pace, positioning, and sharp finishing will be crucial if Samtse are to continue their winning form this season and a winless form against Thimphu City FC, a streak that has persisted over the years. For the Citizens, Jetsuen Dorji has quietly emerged as a consistent attacking force, finding the back of the net in all three matches so far. Meanwhile, Dawa Tshering, Bhutan’s national team hero in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Yemen, has already added two goals this season and will face his former club, Samtse FC, in what promises to be an emotionally charged return. Adding more spice to the clash is Yuya Kuriya, who is also set to play against his former club after making his return to Bhutan with Samtse FC.  The Japanese goalkeeper will be eager to stamp his authority and help the Samtse FC  extend their flawless run. With both teams having plenty to prove and personal battles to be settled, this fixture promises fireworks. Will Thimphu City’s perfect run continue, or can Samtse FC script their first-ever victory over the Citizens?

BFF Academy Stuns The Gzilly Bears at Changlimithang Stadium

The BOB Bhutan Premier League 2025 returned and kicked off with an electrifying clash that showcased the vibrant spirit of Bhutanese football between the two unbeaten sides, Transport United FC and BFF Academy. From the outset, BFF Academy displayed their attacking prowess, taking the lead in just the 6th minute. Lham Tenzin found the back of the net with a stunning finish, thanks to a clever assist from Ugyen Wangchuk. The early goal sent ripples of excitement through the crowd, but Transport United was quick to respond, launching relentless attacks in search of an equaliser. As the first half progressed, both teams battled fiercely, with Transport United applying pressure in search of a breakthrough. However, BFF Academy’s defence stood firm, ensuring that the score remained 1-0 as the teams headed into halftime. The second half began with a dramatic twist when Transport United levelled the score shortly after the whistle. Abayomi, demonstrating poise under pressure, converted a penalty kick following a foul in the box, tying the game at 1-1. The momentum shifted as Transport United sought to capitalise on their newfound confidence. Yet, the Academy boys were not to be outdone. Responding swiftly, Dorji Yonten restored BFF Academy’s lead with a deft header, assisted by Rinzen Dorji, sending the fans into a frenzy once again. Just minutes later, Tandin Phuntsho sealed the victory with a composed finish coming off the bench a few minutes earlier, bringing the final score to 3-1 in favour of BFF Academy. Transport United FC 1 : 3 BFF Academy This victory marked a historic moment for BFF Academy, as they secured their first three points from Transport United FC and the first three of the season while continuing their unbeaten run after two previous draws. For Transport United, the loss served as a wake-up call, prompting them to reassess their tactical approach moving forward in the league. With this win, BFF Academy climbed to the 4th spot of the BoB Bhutan Premier League, 2025 points table, right below Transport United FC with 6 points, having failed to win against them. Up next, Thimphu City FC will take on Samtse FC at Changlimithang Stadium.

Transport United vs BFF Academy: Back to League Business After the Break

After a long international break, domestic football is back at Changlimithang, with Transport United hosting BFF Academy U-19 this afternoon in what should be an exciting clash between experience and youth. Transport United FC comes into the match with two wins from two. They kicked off their campaign with a dominant 3-0 win over Samtse, where Foda Fofana from Guinea bagged a brace and took home Man of the Match. Phurba Tenzin opened the scoring that day. In their second match, they edged out Tensung 1-0 away at MTC Ground, thanks to a late goal from Jigdrel Wangchuk. Their squad features five foreign players this season, and the quality and depth they bring have made a difference early on. A few of their local stars were also away during the break, representing the senior national team in the recent friendlies against Bangladesh and the AFC qualifiers against Brunei. BFF Academy, on the other hand, are sticking to their usual identity, no foreign signings, just pure local talent as they represent the future of Bhutanese football. Their young squad has been competitive, even if the results haven’t quite gone their way. They’ve drawn both of their matches so far, 2-2 against Ugyen Academy and 1-1 against Samtse. In both games, they led, only to concede late equalisers. Rinzin Dorji’s two set-piece goals in the opener were a standout moment, while Sonam Dorji’s stunning strike against Samtse turned heads. The team returned from a strong showing at the SAFF U-19 Championship in Arunachal Pradesh and will be looking to carry that momentum into the league. Transport United FC currently sit third in the standings with 6 points from 2 matches, just behind Paro FC and Thimphu City, both of whom have played one match more and have 9 points. The Grizzly Bears have won both their opening games 3-0 against Samtse and 1-0 against Tensung, without conceding a single goal. Their +4 goal difference and perfect start make them one of the strongest early contenders for the title. What sets them apart is their balance across the field, solid defensive structure, reliable midfield control, and lethal finishing when chances arise. Led by Coach Yeshi Wangchuk, the squad is building on its experience and appears determined to challenge for the crown again this season. A win today will not only keep their 100% record intact but will also draw them level on points with the table-toppers, while still having a game in hand. The Grizzly Bears know the stakes, and with their pedigree, they’ll want to assert their dominance early before the title race heats up. Meanwhile, BFF Academy U19 occupy 7th place with 2 points from 2 games, both ending in draws—2-2 against Ugyen Academy and 1-1 against Samtse. Despite their position on the table, the Academy side remains unbeaten, and their performances have shown grit and flashes of brilliance. The young squad has scored 3 goals and conceded 3, with a goal difference of 0. While defensively shaky at times, they’ve been effective going forward, especially in transitional play. Their challenge now is consistency and focus, holding onto leads and managing pressure in the final minutes. Today’s encounter presents a tough test, but also a golden opportunity. If they manage to take even a point from a top-tier side like Transport United, it will reflect how far they’ve grown as a unit. A win, meanwhile, would be historic—it would not only be their first-ever victory over Transport United but also their first three points of the season. For Transport United FC: A win moves them to 9 points and puts them joint top of the league. A win lifts them to 5 points, leapfrogging several teams into the top half of the table and sends a strong message that the youth side is no longer just here to learn, they’re here to compete. Transport has the firepower and experience. The Academy boys have the legs and a point to prove. After almost a month without league action, both teams will be eager to shake off the rust and get back into rhythm.
