Changjiji, Thimphu | 28 February 2026 The Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) officially inaugurated the FIFA Arena Project 2026 ground at Loseling Middle Secondary School in Changjiji this morning, marking another important step in strengthening football infrastructure in Bhutan. The ceremony was graced by the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, who attended as the Guest of Honour. Also in attendance were Lyonpo Yeezang De Thapa, FIFA Regional Director for Member Associations (Asia and Oceania) Sanjeevan C. Balasingam, representatives from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, officials from FIFA, the Bhutan Olympic Committee, as well as the principal, teachers, and students of Loseling Middle Secondary School. The program began with the traditional Marchang ceremony, a sacred Bhutanese offering performed to invoke blessings, remove obstacles, and ensure the success of significant milestones. The ceremony set an auspicious tone for the inauguration of the new facility. In his opening address, Dasho Ugen Tsechup, President of the Bhutan Football Federation, highlighted the broader vision behind the initiative. “In a mountainous nation like ours, where quality playing space is limited, these mini pitches will transform the future of football. We want to ensure that no child in Bhutan has to travel miles to find a proper ball and a safe field; we want football at the doorstep of every Bhutanese home. With the visionary support of FIFA and the blessings of His Royal Highness, it is our dream and mission to establish 100 mini pitches across every Dzongkhag and school in the country. We assure FIFA that your trust and investment in Bhutan will bear fruit that will make you proud.” Bhutan has already successfully installed two high-quality mini-pitches under the FIFA Arena initiative, one at Loseling Middle Secondary School in Thimphu and another at Tenduk Central School,  reinforcing the federation’s commitment to ensuring access to professional-standard playing surfaces for young football enthusiasts. During the ceremony, Mr. Sanjeevan C. Balasingam presented the official FIFA Arena pennant to the BFF President, symbolising the strong partnership and shared vision between FIFA and Bhutanese football authorities in advancing the game at the grassroots level. The highlight of the morning followed as His Royal Highness formally inaugurated the FIFA Arena ground, marking a proud and forward-looking milestone for Bhutanese football. Guests were later invited to experience the facility firsthand and observe a grassroots football session featuring 20 young players, showcasing the project’s core mission to inspire and empower the next generation through sport. The program concluded with the formal handover of the FIFA Arena ground to Loseling Middle Secondary School, ensuring that the facility will serve as a long-term hub for school and community football development. The partnership marks an important step in strengthening private-sector collaboration in support of football development in Bhutan. The MoU was signed at a formal ceremony held at the BFF Headquarters in Babena, attended by the Managing Director of Tashi Beverages Ltd., Bhutan Coca-Cola, Mr. Tshenchok Thinley, and the General Secretary of the Bhutan Football Federation, Mr. Ugyen Wangchhuk. The agreement outlines cooperation in supporting BFF competitions, events, and grassroots initiatives, while enhancing the match-day experience for players, officials, and supporters. The Pepsi Bhutan Higher Secondary School Championship 2025–26 (Nationals) concluded successfully with competitive matches across age categories, reaffirming the championship’s role as a key platform for school football development in Bhutan. At the conclusion of the Nationals, Ugyen Academy emerged as the most successful school of the tournament, completing a historic clean sweep by winning all four national titles- U16 Boys, U16 Girls, U19 Boys, and U19 Girls. The U16 National Championships were conducted across two venues, with the U16 Boys competition hosted at Tsirang Artificial Turf and the U16 Girls matches played at UA Artificial Turf. The junior category showcased promising talent and improving tactical awareness among participating schools. In the U16 Girls final, Ugyen Academy secured a 1–0 victory over Norbugang Central School in a closely contested match. Both teams demonstrated strong defensive organisation, with Ugyen Academy capitalising on a decisive moment to claim the title and manage the game effectively until the final whistle. The U16 Boys final between Ugyen Academy and Peljorling Higher Secondary School ended in a goalless draw after regulation time. The championship was decided through a penalty shootout, where Ugyen Academy prevailed 4–3, displaying composure and resilience under pressure to lift the U16 Boys title. The conclusion of the U16 competitions highlighted the steady progress of school football at the junior level and set a positive tone for the senior age group championships. The focus then shifted to Changlimithang Stadium, Thimphu, where the U19 Boys and Girls National Level Championship brought together the top-performing schools from across the country. The tournament delivered high-intensity matches, emerging talents, and notable results, reflecting the growing competitiveness of school football in Bhutan. In the U19 Girls competition, Ugyen Academy maintained consistency and discipline throughout the tournament to claim the national title. Motithang Higher Secondary School finished as runners-up following a commendable campaign. The U19 Boys competition proved to be one of the most competitive editions in recent years. Ugyen Academy emerged as champions, while Gedu Higher Secondary School secured the runners-up position after an impressive run. One of the major highlights of the championship was Gedu HSS’s semifinal victory over two-time runners-up Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School, a result that marked a significant turning point in the tournament. Additionally, the league stage produced an unexpected outcome, with reigning champions Gelephu Higher Secondary School failing to register a win, underscoring the increasing depth and competitiveness of school football nationwide. Individual performances were recognised as part of the championship’s closing ceremony. Ugyen Lhamo of Ugyen Academy and Ngawang Sonam of Ugyen Academy were awarded the Top Goal Scorer honours in the U19 Girls and Boys categories, respectively. The Best Goalkeeper awards were presented to Jigme Choden of Rangjung Central School (U19 Girls) and Binod Ghalley of Gedu Higher Secondary School (U19 Boys). The Most Valuable Player awards were claimed by Pema Selden Dorji (U19 Girls) and Chimi Dorji (U19 Boys), both representing Ugyen Academy. The Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) proudly congratulates the national women’s futsal team, the Dragon Girls, for securing a historic bronze medal at the inaugural SAFF Women’s Futsal Championship 2025–26, marking a significant milestone for Bhutanese women’s football and futsal on the regional stage. Bhutan delivered a commendable tournament campaign, finishing third overall with 11 points from six matches. The Dragon Girls recorded three wins, two draws, and one defeat, scoring 18 goals and conceding 13, underlining their attacking intent, resilience, and growing tactical maturity throughout the competition. Bhutan opened their campaign with a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Pakistan, followed by an impressive 3–3 draw against eventual champions Bangladesh. The team then gathered momentum with convincing victories over Sri Lanka (5–1) and the Maldives (4–2), before producing one of the standout performances of the tournament with a 2–1 win over India, who later finished as runners-up. Bhutan’s only defeat came against Nepal in a closely contested 5–3 match, which did little to diminish an otherwise outstanding campaign. Deki Lhazon tops the goalscoring chart for Bhutan Individually, Deki Lhazom emerged as one of Bhutan’s key attacking players, finishing the tournament with four goals, while the collective effort and unity of the squad remained the defining strength behind the bronze-medal success. Reflecting on the achievement, team captain Sonam Lhamo expressed pride in the team’s journey and performance: “Winning the bronze medal in the first-ever SAFF Women’s Futsal Championship is a proud moment for all of us. We believed in ourselves, fought together in every match, and showed that Bhutan can compete confidently at the regional level. This achievement belongs to the entire team and everyone who has supported us.” Bangladesh were crowned champions of the tournament, with India finishing as runners-up, while Bhutan claimed third place ahead of Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. 4th Edition of the Pepsi Bhutan Higher Secondary School Championship, 2025-26, to Kick Off Tomorrow The recent regional high school football tournament concluded on January 9, after a week of intense competition that began on January 3. Schools from all seven regions of Bhutan-Thimphu, Punakha, Tsirang, Samtse, Samdrupjongkhar, Bumthang, and Mongarbattled fiercely for glory. A total of 42 teams participated in this thrilling tournament-21 boys’ teams and 21 girls’ teams. The matches were marked by energy, skill, and determination as young athletes showcased their talents across various venues. After fierce competition, seven boys’ teams emerged victorious and secured their spots in the upcoming national championship. These teams are Yangchenphug HSS, Tashidingkha CS, Gelephu HSS, Mongar HSS, Jakar HSS, Orong CS, and Gedu HSS. They will be joined by last year’s champions, Ugyen Academy. On the girls’ side, seven teams also qualified: Norbuling CS, Taktse CS, Gaserling CS, Yadi HSS, Ugyen Academy, Mothithang HSS, and Rangjung CS, along with last year’s winners, Gelephu HSS.   Groups The grand finals, the Nationals, are scheduled to commence on January 22, 2026. The intensive three-day Capacity Building for Administrators under the FIFA Women’s Development Programme, led by Ms. Natcha Tarateerasarn and Ms. Pema Choden Tshering, both Women’s Football experts, reached its successful conclusion today, marking a significant milestone in the professionalisation of football management in the country. The final day was packed with critical insights into governance, followed by a celebratory closing ceremony that honoured the dedication of participants from across the football community. The final day commenced with a focus on the ethical foundations of the sport. Mr. Tshewang Tashi, the Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) Security Head and Integrity Officer, led the first session on Integrity and Security. His presentation underscored the importance of maintaining the highest ethical standards and ensuring a secure environment for the growth of the game.The workshop then moved toward the technicalities of professional club management. Miss Natcha from FIFA, alongside Ms. Kuenzang Choden, delivered a comprehensive session on Club Licensing. This segment provided administrators with the roadmap necessary to meet international standards, ensuring that local clubs are built on sustainable and professional foundations.The educational portion of the day wrapped up with a vital presentation on Safeguarding. Miss Natcha returned to the podium, joined by Mr. Nidup Gyeltshen, to emphasise the collective responsibility of administrators in protecting all participants, especially youth, within the football ecosystem. Many shared heartfelt reflections on their three-day journey, citing the practical knowledge gained and the valuable networking opportunities provided.“These three days have not only equipped us with better management tools but have also strengthened our commitment to the sport,” said Chimmi of RTC FC. “We are grateful for the expertise shared by both local and FIFA representatives, which will greatly support our work in advancing women’s football.” The afternoon transition into the official closing ceremony was marked by a sense of pride. Two prominent figures in Bhutanese football graced the event: Mr Hishey Tshering, President of Thimphu City FC and a member of the BFF Executive Committee, and Mr Jigme Tshewang, President of Transport United FC and a member of the BFF Executive Committee.The Chief Guests presented certificates to the participants, recognising their active engagement and successful completion of the program.In his closing remarks, Mr. Hishey Tshering offered inspiring words to the gathered administrators. The Bhutan Football Federation successfully conducted the 2nd Edition of the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS) – Talent Identification (TID) Course in Gelephu, exclusively for BFF Elite Coaches. The three-day course was led by FIFA TDS Lead, Mr. Eric, and focused on strengthening the capacity of elite coaches in modern talent identification and player development methodologies. A total of 19 participants took part in the program, which featured a balanced combination of theoretical insights and practical, field-based sessions. Key areas of focus included talent identification principles, player profiling, long-term player development, and the effective application of FIFA TDS frameworks within the Bhutanese football ecosystem. Under Mr. Eric’s expert guidance, participants were exposed to FIFA’s global best practices, with particular emphasis on identifying potential talent at an early age and aligning development pathways with Bhutan’s national football development strategy.
