Bhutan Ends AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers on a Winning Note
The Bhutan national team signed off their AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Qualifiers campaign in style, securing a memorable victory over Brunei Darussalam in their final fixture. The Dragon Boys displayed resilience, character, and attacking intent to deliver a performance that will be remembered as a proud moment for Bhutanese football.
The match saw the much-anticipated return of Chencho Gyeltshen, fondly known as CG7, who made an immediate impact after a year-long absence due to injury. Leading from the front, the talismanic forward scored twice with towering headers, inspiring a remarkable comeback and underlining his importance to the national side. His goals not only turned the game around but also took his international tally to 14, reaffirming his status as Bhutan’s leading goal scorer.
The final match of the qualifiers also marked the debuts of two promising players, Jigme Tshultrim, who started for the Dragon Boys, and Sonam Phuntsho, who came off the bench in the second half, signalling a bright future for Bhutanese football.
Bhutan’s performance was defined by intensity, discipline, and a strong collective spirit. After going behind, the team showed great determination to fight back, with players across the pitch contributing to a cohesive and energetic display. The victory reflects the growing maturity and belief within the squad as they continue to develop on the international stage.
Although Bhutan narrowly missed out on qualification for the AFC Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027, finishing third in Group B with four points, the campaign provided valuable experience and highlighted the team’s steady progress. Competing against strong opposition, the Dragon Boys demonstrated their ability to challenge and improve with each outing.
The Bhutan Football Federation extends its heartfelt appreciation to the players, coaching staff, and supporters who stood by the team throughout the qualifiers. Special thanks are also extended to the Assam Football Association for facilitating the use of the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium as the neutral venue for the final match.
As the curtain falls on this qualifying campaign, Bhutan looks ahead with optimism and determination. This victory is not just an end, but a strong foundation for the future, signalling continued growth, ambition, and belief in Bhutanese football.
